Steelhead fishing
with Valley Guide Service
North Coast Rivers
December - March
If your dream has been to land the incredible
strong fighting winter run Steelhead, then a drift boat trip down one of the
North Coast rivers such as the
Eel, Mattole, Van Duzen
or Smith will be the trip for you. Floating down the river through the giant
Redwoods is worth the trip alone. But the reason we are here is for the hard
fighting wild Steelhead averaging 8 - 13 lbs. Multiple hookups per day are
common with the chance for a twenty lb. plus fish lurking in every drift.
Having several base camps on these rivers allows us to target the best rivers
the conditions allow. Enjoy your adventure while seated in a heated drift boat
with a rain top to keep you comfortable. All Loomis rods with Shimano reels are
provided.
Feather River
October - December
Mid October finds the Feather River full
of spawning King Salmon. Every sand bar is littered with carcasses and every
fast riffle is loaded with Salmon at the end of their
journey.
This seems like a sad time for the Feather River, but it signals another great
fishery "Steelhead". These
sea- run Rainbows lay behind the spawning fish gorging themselves on fresh eggs
expelled from the female Salmon. Fresh Roe and egg imitations or "Glo-Bugs" as
they are often called, are fished in the fast water rapids behind the spawning Salmon on
light tackle with six or eight-pound line. Hooking a Steelhead is relatively easy
but keeping one of the acrobats on is another story. Averaging from three - six
pounds, Feather River Steelhead will try all of your angling skills. A photo of
you holding one of these gorgeous fish with its red stripe and emerald green
back will be one to cherish forever. Expect anywhere from two – six hook-ups per
day per angler on these trips.
